General:
- How do I use the features of AwayBox?
Answer: Please click here to add AwayBox to AIM.
- I was able to add AwayBox, but I get an error saying "An error has occurred in the script on this page" or "A runtime error has occured" when clicking any of the buttons.
Answer: Using AwayBox in AOL Instant Messenger currently requires Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher to work. Please download the latest version of Internet Explorer.
If you are unable to download IE 5.5 or higher, you can still use the Random Messages, Custom Random Messages, and Back Timer features of AwayBox by utilizing the toolbar buttons on the left of this website. However, you will not be able to add AwayBox to AIM.
Trouble Adding AwayBox:
- When I try to add AwayBox, I get the following error: "This Expression format is no longer supported."
Answer: AwayBox does not currently work with AIM 5.9 or higher. If you have AIM 5.9 or higher, click here to downgrade to AIM 5.5.
- When trying to add AwayBox, I get the following error: "You have clicked on an AIM hyperlink that your client does not support."
Answer: This means you don't have AOL Instant Messenger 5.0 or higher (which is required to run AwayBox). Click here to download the latest version.
- When trying to add AwayBox, I get the following error: "The AIM hyperlink you've clicked on may require you to be online to work. Please log in first."
Answer: You must be signed on AOL Instant Messenger before adding AwayBox. Please sign on and try again.
- When trying to add AwayBox, I get the following error: "Windows cannot find 'aim:GetExpression?URL=..."
Answer: This means there was a problem with AIM, causing Windows to be unable to recognize it. Please completely exit AIM and reopen it.
- I am using a Mac, or am unable to upgrade to AIM 5.0. Is there any way I can use AwayBox without adding it to AOL Instant Messenger?
Answer: You can use the Random Messages, Custom Random Messages, and Back Timer features of AwayBox by utilizing the toolbar on the left of the AwayBox website.
Using Random Away Messages:
- I have successfully added AwayBox to AOL Instant Messenger. How do I use the Random Away Messages feature?
Answer: Once you have added AwayBox, you should see a toolbar on the left hand side of AIM. Simply click on the "Random" button, and select a category. This will make your away message random.

- I get the following error: "Could not unset Away state"
Answer: This is because you changed your font/color settings too fast or switched too fast from one away message set to another. AIM has an "away message rate limit" that prevents you from setting your away message too often. Click "I'm Back" in the AwayBox window and wait a few minutes, and everything should work fine again.
- How do I change the font, background color, or font color of the away message?
Answer: You can change these settings in the AwayBox window while the Random Away Messages are running.

- How do I create my own set of away messages to randomize?
